lets assume while coming it takes x gallons.then while going it takes (x+1/4)gallons.then

x+(x+1/4)=4.5

2x=4.5-.25=4.25

x=4.25/2=2.125

x=2.125

Hi ananad, your anser is wrong . Please read the question carefully. Lakshmi answer is correct. The question says 1/4 more not 1/4 times morex+x+0.25=4.5x=2.125so coming 2.125going 2.125 + .25---------------------------Total 4.5

     Let the fuel consumed while going and coming  be g  & c units resp.
      acc. to the ques,
      g=0.25+c
      g+c=4.5
      solving we get, c=2.125 ans
