As related to project management:
1. Collect all inputs
2. Develop proposed solution / alternative solution.
3. Evaluate all pros/cons of proposed/alternative, ensure that you collected input from your customer and team,  that you know view of your management.
4. Prepare final proposal, include considerations against alternative solution if necessary, make sure that you secured concurrence of your management before you requested formal approvals from customer.
5. Rebaseline the project according to approved proposal.
