The Client knows his requirements / expectations from the use of proposed software. A Business Analyst captures the requirements through interviews with Client and documents collected from client and translate the issues in to the language of developers who have knowledge of the software they are dealing with. In simple terms BA acts like a translator and the document SRS (Software Requirement Specification)is prepared by him. Later on FSD (Functional Specification Document) is also prepared by BA in some projects where there is no Functional Consultant.

Generally, Testing is to be done by a Business Consultant who is not involved / associated with Development of Software as per "Principle of Indpendence" expected while testing Software.

Business Analyst is a person who does not need to know much about the technology, He has the domain knowledge. For example if we have to develop a banking systme, it will be better to consult a person who know about banking domain, preferably we can consult a person of bank who has a complete knowledge about domain. He will define how the system works in a bank and how we should go for designing a system, that will be his role with the development team. With testing team he will define what should happen we we give input and how should the process flow.In short he gives information to the development team about the System and Testing team how system should work.If I am wrong please mail me at qysa@yahoo.co.in

Business Analyst is a domain expert in Banking or some specialised activity or business and acts like a translator to convey client's / business requirements to developers or designers of System. BA also need to have the technical knowledge to the extent of functionality of the System being developed and be able to convey in clear terms clients requirements to development team.

Business analyst may be called upon to test developments to the extent of functionality and client's needs although it is not advisable.
