In ksds we will defining keys(5 0) this is a primary key. this a numeric but if we want some character as a key we going for alternateindex.using AIX we can retrieve records. recordsize(avg max)

For accessing a VSAM cluster sequentially, STARTBR, READNEXT, ENDBR commands are used. Suppose the VSAM cluster is sorted on the basis of a field (lets say age) and using STARTBR pointer is positioned on the record with name 'brijesh'. By using READNEXT that record is read. Now if i again use READNEXT, next record will be read(which could be the record with name other than 'brijesh'). If I want to read the next record with the same name (i.e. brijesh), whether RESETBR will be correct option for me. By using RESETBR here, whether the pointer will be placed at the next record with same name(brijesh) or the first record with the name 'brijesh'. Please explain the same.

VSAM was written as a replacement for ISAM. The main problem with ISAM was that if there were many insertions and deletions the way he chained the entries was horribly inefficient. VSAM through the use of splitting CIs was a hugh improvement.

Why did VSAM come into existance? Think DOS VS! Using VSAM was much, much easier than coding masses of inflexible DLBL and EXTENT cards for running jobs in DOS VS.

VSAM-ESDS-AIX
When its not possible to read ESDS file randomly through COBOL program then what is the use of creating AIX for that file? If reading that file randomly is possible then plz give me the details. I tried but without success.

Basically the previous answers have all hit around the issue. My understanding is that you should use IMPORT and EXPORT if you want to take a dataset that is in one catalog and get it into another catalog. REPRO is fine for creating a backup copy.

I believe AIX is built on either RBA or RRA (Relative byte address or relative record address) so if you did a read using these, you should be able to 'randomly' read the file. I believe you would also have to request something like skip sequential processing.

Both the statements are true. Collection of CI's is called CA means one or more than one CI together forms a CA. In case, a CA comprises of only one CI it means CI=CA in that case. Hope i answer your question.

At one time, can't say if this restriction still exists but it had to do with the ability to address the records. Because VSAM only allowed for even numbers, the addressing allowed for 4G of data, so the number of records was limited to what could be fit into that size space.
