In addition to the above solution, we can use SPLIT BY in SORT. But it will depend on condition of split.

VSAM was written as a replacement for ISAM. The main problem with ISAM was that if there were many insertions and deletions the way he chained the entries was horribly inefficient. VSAM through the use of splitting CIs was a hugh improvement.

When its not possible to read ESDS file randomly through COBOL program then what is the use of creating AIX for that file? If reading that file randomly is possible then plz give me the details. I tried but without success.

Basically the previous answers have all hit around the issue. My understanding is that you should use IMPORT and EXPORT if you want to take a dataset that is in one catalog and get it into another catalog. REPRO is fine for creating a backup copy.

I believe AIX is built on either RBA or RRA (Relative byte address or relative record address) so if you did a read using these, you should be able to 'randomly' read the file. I believe you would also have to request something like skip sequential processing.

We can do it by ICETOOL by selecting the firs duplicate row only and rest of the rows based on the transtion type it will not copy.
SELECT FROM(IN) TO(OUT) ON(starting post,length,CH) USING(CTL1) FIRST - it will copy the first records only.

It is not possible to do it in single SORT step. 2 steps are required. First, extract all 39 type transaction record using EXCLUDE statement. Second, remove duplicate from step 1 file with SUM FIELDS=NONE. Third, merge output from step1 and 2.

All VSAM datasets are SMS managed. SMS managed datasets are cataloged. So while creating a vsam dataset using the IDCAMS utility the dataset is  cataloged.

At one time, can't say if this restriction still exists but it had to do with the ability to address the records. Because VSAM only allowed for even numbers, the addressing allowed for 4G of data, so the number of records was limited to what could be fit into that size space.

Start is used to read a file dynamically (Some where in between the file), so its not needed for sequential read from end of the file. Moving High-values to Key field would absolutely work.

1024 and 4096 are powers of 2. You could specify 1000 and 4000 but VSAM would actually use 1024 and 4096 although I'm not sure if the full 1024 would actually be available to you. Short answer is that since that is the number VSAM will use, 1000 or 4000 will not save you anything.
