in alternator at lagging power factor armature flux demagnetises the main flux so in order to maintain rated voltage extra(over) excitation is required . so over excited alternator operates at lagging p.f

It will operate in leading power factor, it is also called synchronous condenser.

as it is driving current i.e graeater than the rated value the pf will be leading .
