Transformers are required to work at higher efficiency. Current transformer will require a lot of conductors increasing copper losses and the over all cost. This type of transformers are used in instrumentation systems for lower current ratings.

I assume that by current source you mean constant current source. In such case the primary and secondary voltage of the transformer will depend on the impedance of the transformer and the load. The load current will depend on the transformation ratio. If you connect a current source to the primary of a transformer, you must ensure that a load is always connected across its secondary terminals to avoid excessive voltage across them. Practical example of current source connected to the primary is a CT, whose primary current which is the line current depends on the load current of the main circuit and is not constant.

In case of an ideal current source , it will deliver same current irrespective of the load connected to the secondary terminals thus proper transformation will not take place in order to maintain constant flux.
