The spiral model is similar to the incremental model. The spiral model has four phases: Planning, Risk Analysis, Engineering and Evaluation.

Requirements are gathered during the planning phase.  In the risk analysis phase, a process is undertaken to identify risk and alternate solutions.  A prototype is produced at the end of the risk analysis phase.

Advantages

  • High amount of risk analysis
  • Good for large and mission-critical projects.
  • Software is produced early in the software life cycle
  • Disadvantages:

    • Can be a costly model to use.
    • Risk analysis requires highly specific expertise.
    • Project?s success is highly dependent on the risk analysis phase.
    • Doesn?t work well for smaller projects.

    spiral model

boehm proposed this modelach loop is split into four sections\\

    a. to determine the objectives,alternatives,&constraints

    b. risk analysis & evalutions of alternatives

    c. execution of that phase of development

    d. planning the next phase.

at the end of each phase customer interaction is doneso this helps management.

advantage : these are useful for high risk projects.

disadvantage : these are not useful in low risk projects.

The Spiral Model combines features of the Prototyping Model and the Waterfall Model.  This model considers iterative development as well as the phases within each iteration and the stages within each phase.  On a gross level, an iteration is subdivided into these phases: 1) Determine objectives, 2) Identify and resolve risks, 3) Development and Test, and 4) Plan the next iteration.

    ADVANTAGES

    1) High amount of risk analysis
    2) Good for large and mission-critical projects
    3) Software is produced early in the software life cycle

    DISADVANTAGES

    1) Can be a costly model to use
    2) Risk analysis requires highly specific expertise
    3) Project’s success is highly dependent on the risk analysis phase
    4) Doesn’t work well for smaller projects
