Make sure that the web application is tested across all popularly used browsers like Netscape,IE, Mozilla Firefox with current as well old versions.

IE is very flexible in dealing with html tags but netscape is very picky about tags. Also font display between IE and netscape may look different and as a tester you need to identify these variations.

Some times if you use a plug-in like macromedia flash screen to send data via a cgi to backend (flat file / database) make sure to test the data transfer on all browsers speciied for testing

Check the html page is xhtml compitable or not, through W3C validator.

Best practice to use 3rd party wel-known code, i.e. for js, better to use welknown framework like Prototype instead of using our own.

This is the answer i got from an  article  regarding Browser compatibility testing

Reading this will get more idea of it

In my web-testing career I have experienced this as most influencing part on web site testing.

Some applications are very dependent on browsers. Different browsers have different configurations and settings that your web page should be compatible with. Your web site coding should be cross browser platform compatible. If you are using java scripts or AJAX calls for UI functionality, performing security checks or validations then give more stress on browser compatibility testing of your web application.

Test web application on different browsers like Internet explorer, Firefox, Netscape navigator, AOL, Safari, Opera browsers with different versions

Need to test:

1.Functionality and
2.Design issues

1) Identify all of the operating systems (OS) and browsers you wish to test
2) Create a compatibility matrix that defines which browsers will be tested on each OS
3) Run regression tests on all browser/OS combinations
4) Run a portion of your functional tests on each browser during functional testing

As per my web testing experiance.

We can test the compability on different  broweser by making the checklist of functionality and GUIs. While carrying the testing we have to check all the points in each and every browser according to the checklist. The checklist may consist of  few end to end scenarios as well.

This is my personel style, if anybody would like to suggest me the better option those are always welcome.
