The Time and Budget both are the key factors in determining whether the test goes on Manual or it can be Automated.Apart from that The automation is required for areas such as Functional, Regression, Load and User Interface for accurate results.

Ad-hoc testing should used only when the requirements are not written,or is not documented like an extereme programming .Normal projects where there are baselined requiremnts ,should not follow ad-hoc testing procedure.It must have testplan,testcase,testreport.
