Since ICE were developed it became mandatory to developed speedy and racing vehicles or automobiles due to increasing competition. so designers started finding out ways to speed up engine and boost its power one way is to build bigger engine which in turn increases weight so this was not better and this led to the development of superchargers because it increases efficiency and so boost the engine power.  These are powered mechanically by chain or belt drive connected to engine's crankshaft.  As far as working is concerned then in normal engines's what happens is when piston moves down there is vacuum in combustion chamber and air is sucked into it at ATM press. It combines with fuel to form charge of economically correct mixture spark plug ignites the mixture n initiates chemical reaction which leads to combustion now there is explosion which creates power and drives piston down creating reciprocating motion eventually transferred to wheels for more power explosion more fuel is required and since we can't disturb A/F ratio so the supercharger fulfills our requirement it increases intake by compressing air above ATM press. Without creating vacuum thus more air is forced into cylinder providing a " boost" . Now more fuel can be added n power of engine can be increased.   It can be incresed upto 46% of more HP and 31% of more torque.

It is done to improve power obtained from engine.  Idea behind it is that it could be done by increasing mass flow rate in engine cylinder, for that at initial stage dendity of charge is increased by raising its pressure.  It is done by using supercharger.   Normally screw compresorand turbo charger in this case a turbine is driven by exaust gases which in-turn developes power for driving comp which raises density.

Super charging is a process in which compressed air is sent in to the engine cylinder, this is basically to increase the efficency of the engine, found mainly in diesel engines. The atmospheric air is absorbed and passed into a compressor and then this compressed air is then send into the engine through inlet valve.
