Method based (Adhoc testing, Integration testing, functional testing etc)
Technique based (BVA,Eq.Partitioning etc.)
Phase based (smoke testing, installation testing, regression testing etc)

The most common test categories are: Smoke Testing TC's, System Test TC's, Regression TC's and Adhoc TC's
