DC Machine as Generator

It is possible to run one DC machine as a generator or motor purposely? What adjustment we have to do for that operation?

We can operate a electromechanical energy conversion device as generator as well as motor. It depends how we want to operate the machine. A machine works as an motor when we provide electrical energy as input and gets mechanical energy as output. So when we provide DC supply at field winding to excite the  system and to produce working flux so there is a mutual interaction between rotor (Motor rotates when we provide AC to the prime mover) and flux density which produces DC on armature and that DC can be converted in AC by the action of commutator. This is the working of DC generator.
