Business rules are the key in defining any business process. example, credit card company wants to prepare the process and the key business rule is - check applicant's credit score and income. the process will need to include these two sub-process to complete the main process and without with it will through an exception. you can use the use case diagram or process diagram to include this information in your Use case document or Functional Requirement Document.

Always refer to the BRD as bible. Work back and forth between design, user input and requirements. Put place holders, create notes and check requirements before inittiating a JAD. Rule of thumb.. requirements should be clarified/revised before design begins. This is an integral part of JAD. However, if that doesnot happen, then it should be done with all stake holders (IT+Business) before commencement of design. Certain times, the requirements change while design happens. In these cases, taking sign off from business/IT as well as versioning and publishing the document helps keep on track.
