Here is an example list of protocols supported by a tool called LoadUI. the protocols you can test will depend on the protocls supported by your app and the load test tool.

"loadUI is a tool for Load Testing numerous protocols, such as Web Services, REST, AMF, JMS, JDBC as well as Web Sites."

we are using web(http/html) Protocol in HP Load Runner and http protocol in IBM RPT tool as well to record any Script by using Web Applications.
