environment variables are global variables....

There are two types of Environments variables. User Defined,Pre defined.

Operatinng system is just one of the environment varibale which is predefined.

You use them whenever you want to use a variable across mutiple, Tests

eg: u defined appURL : http://asdfasf/index

if it changes just the link has changed you can change the environment variable appURL to  new URL and you need not change any code .
