creating a filter in designer is different from creatind a filter in business object

if u create a filter in designer it can acessible to all the reports ur r using i'e,it can used for further applications where as creatin a filter vin business object is dynamic(run time) it will applicable to only tht particular report

Yes to add what mayuri has said.

say we have a generalised condition which needs to be applicable to say 10 reports,so we need not write the same conditions 10 times just define it in the designer part and then export the particular universe

when you come to the reporter u can see the same condition here and u can use it to any number of reports.

In addition to this,when we use the filter in Universe ,it filters the data when the  query run against the database. This will increase the performance.

when we use the filter condition in report ,it query the data from the database and filetr the data in the report level.This decrease the performance.

Adding filter in the universe designer will filter the data from the database itself.it increases the performance that particular filter can be used in other reports also when it needed.
Adding filter in the Business Objects will also filter the data efficiently and its a time consuming process (i.e. itll run the query bring all the data and then filtering in the report)moreover we can use that particular filter in that report only.

How can filters from Universe or Reports level filter data from different places? As the both type of filters are ultimately applied in the reports with Data Source as output of ETL

Do the filters created the Universe level do any filtering of data that the Universe level also or they are just created to facilitate common filtering criterias at the report level

Filters applied at Universe objects level restrict data for every user
This indicates filters at universe object bring restricted data to micro-cube where the users at report doesnt have control over data.
filter objects which are created as predefined filters can be used at report level by any users are associated with query.
report level filters work on microcube
