sorry............ suman u r not right..... it will b 6 km. as................ let 'a' b the dist. travelled on land..... and 'b' the dist. travelled on hill..... so----------- time for land = a/4 + a/4 = a/2 time for slope = b/3 + b/6 = b/2 so.............. (a+b) / 2 = 6 km so this is the total distance travelled on one side...

hai vivek ,

i think your assumption was wrong .if the s/w engg returns at 4km/hr then he

will take just 1hr 30min to return.now if you consider the whole way as a hill

then he takes only 2hrs to cover the total 6kms.so i can confidently say that

your answer was wrong.i will go with sumans 24kms .

Ans: 12 km. ( The distance covered in one way ).

Justification:  The road travels straight 6 km and then upwards 6km which makes our s/w engineer to cover the distance by 3 and 1/2 hour. Then he returns along the same road as he come downwards and straight to his home by 2 and 1/2 hour. Thus he is back at the home after walking for 6 hours.
Hence the distance covered in one way is 12 km.
