Document type controls the business transaction like vendor invoice or vendor payment like that. and it also controls to which account type can be posted ex: customer, vendor, asset, gl account or material.

In SAP we have so many doc related to each module. So these are mainly differs in the case of number range assignments, mainly it varies field selection.

Document type controls the Docement header and it is used

1. To classify Accounting Documents
For Example  Whether it is Vendor Document, Customer Document or G/L Document etc...

2. To Distinguish between Business Transactions
For Example Whether it is Invoice, Payment etc...

3.To control the Document storage by storing the documents of same document type from one number range together.

Hi Friends ,

Document type is nothing but a voucher type ,
it controls document number ranges ,
it controls document header data ,
based on this we are identified particular document is GL-for "SA",
VENDOR INVOICE -KR
OUTGOING PAYMENT KZ
ADVANCE - KA ,CUSTOMER ,ASSET .....DOCUMENTS

1.The Document Type distinguishes between types of business
transactions that are posted.Ex.SA: General Ledger
acounting Document,DR: Customer Invoice,DZ: Customer Payment

2.The Document Type controls the Account Types that may be
used in the posting with this Document Type .Ex.
D: Customer Accounts
K: Vendor Accounts
S: G/L Accounts
A: Assets Accounts
M: Material Accounts

3.The Document Type is assigned a Number Range, which
controls how Document Numbers are assigned

4.The Document Type can be used as a sort criteria
