Better make the autoextend off and add more datafiles to the tablespace. Making a single datafile to a bigger size is risky...By making autoextend off you can monitor the growth of the tablespace....schedule a growth monitoring script with a threshhold of 85 % full

When checkpoint occurs the datafiles and control file header are updated and also dbwr writes dirty buffer to datafiles checkpoint give the signal.

Whenever switch log occur, checkpoint event will occur, and ckpt event will invoke checkpoint process, then ckpt process will generate SCN No. for specific transaction, and that SCN info will be load into control file and SCN No. writes into data file header, and invoke to dbwr.

There will be no such thing as default size for a tablespace u have to assign it when it is being created.. and more over by default u can have 100 datafiles in a database which is the default value used during the database creation process u can also change this value..

I agree with omelkoz, But I need to add a small point here. Specifying STANDBY is to to prevent all users other than SYS from making DML and DDL changes to any table or sequence being maintained through SQL apply operations. Not everybody can execute statements on a standby. :)
