When its not possible to read ESDS file randomly through COBOL program then what is the use of creating AIX for that file? If reading that file randomly is possible then plz give me the details. I tried but without success.

Basically the previous answers have all hit around the issue. My understanding is that you should use IMPORT and EXPORT if you want to take a dataset that is in one catalog and get it into another catalog. REPRO is fine for creating a backup copy.

I believe AIX is built on either RBA or RRA (Relative byte address or relative record address) so if you did a read using these, you should be able to 'randomly' read the file. I believe you would also have to request something like skip sequential processing.

We can do it by ICETOOL by selecting the firs duplicate row only and rest of the rows based on the transtion type it will not copy.
SELECT FROM(IN) TO(OUT) ON(starting post,length,CH) USING(CTL1) FIRST - it will copy the first records only.

It is not possible to do it in single SORT step. 2 steps are required. First, extract all 39 type transaction record using EXCLUDE statement. Second, remove duplicate from step 1 file with SUM FIELDS=NONE. Third, merge output from step1 and 2.

There is no specific rule about average record length. It should be less than the maximum records length. VSAM uses this figure for efficiency purpose only.

No Jayakumar is right, that is the way of conversion of flat file to KSDS. First sort, then copy to KSDS.

After creating the AI we need to create path and finally we need to create the Build index. Then only the AI will have the actual data in it.

what i have come across,it is always 5 + alternate key length + n*primary Key lengththe key for alternate index is the alternate key and in the data part we have all the related primary keys populated.But i still do not understand how this data part get populated...:)

In ksds we will defining keys(5 0) this is a primary key. this a numeric but if we want some character as a key we going for alternateindex.using  AIX we can retrieve records. recordsize(avg max)

Yes you can search in a VSAM cluster.You can do this search by browsing the VSAM cluster thru FILEAID
Give the search criteria there and get the results

VSAM files are used when we want to store data based on some key fields(Eg: KSDS)access method is indexed.NON VSAM files like PS are used when we want to store data which is not unique and also the access is sequential.

We can define the KSDS cluster by two ways by using the file-aid or by using the IDCAMS Utlity..

By using the IDCAMS utility we can define the record with average length 100 and maximum length 150 with keylength 10 starting at 0 as follows
