Pinion is always input shaft and gearwheel is driven through pinion so gearwheel shaft is called output of the Gear.

In a reduction gear, the smaller high speed pinion is the driver while the larger gear is the driven. Correct me if Im wrong.

Pinion is smaller in diameter whereas gear has larger diameter. If we give power to the pinion and treat it as driver when both are engaged then speed will be reduced.
