Mainly both the stress and pressure are same except being applied in different forms. Pressure is applied on external surface of a body, while stress is the internal resistive force per unit area of that body, which resists its elongation or compression.

The other difference is pressure is applied normal to the body but stress may be in any direction.

Normally pressure is applied in fluid while stress is in solid or material form.

Pressure is the normal compressive force acting on the surface, it is scalar and act externally.

While, Stress is the internal resistance (force) per unit area, it is tensor(neither vector nor scalar) having a certain rank

Stress can be induced by pressure.
For example, in the case of pipe, if we need to apply a circumferential stress to the material, we have to fill the pipe with water and then pressurize water, so that stress will be exerted on the pipes wall.

Pressure is an external feature of the system where as stress is the internal feature of the system. pressure is due to external factors like applied force and due to some external action...but stress is due to internally induced forces or resistant forces developed.

stress is applied to solid body.when a force is applied to the solid body internal resisting force developed to resist that applied force.stress is the ratio of internal resisting force per unit area.
but when the stress field is hydrostatic stress is pressure i.e force/unit area.pressure is a scalar (non directional quantity),but stress is a directional (vector quantity)

Stress depends on material properties as well as net force applied. It may occur in both compressive as well as tensile force. Where pressure depends upon net compressive force applied.

  Was this answer useful?  Yes

Suppose you are applying tensile force on a steel bar then how it responds? You are holding that bar and stretching it along the axis, now think about the half portion (along axis & suppose left portion) of that loaded bar. How will draw you the free body diagram for this portion? Since, that half portion is static (not moving or no translation motion) so, net force acting on this half portion will be zero. Since you are applying a force on this portion from left so, for counter balancing that, definitely their will exist another force in right direction. This force is provided by the internal fibers of loaded bar. So, we can easily say that internal forces are existing within the loaded bar. These internal force per unit area is called stress. Stress is also called internal resistance developed within the loaded specimen.
Pressure can be practically realized by thinking that you are diving under the water surface. Water will exert force on your body. So, pressure is force per unit area but this force is the surface force not the internal force and it should be carefully considered that the pressure force at every point of surface is perpendicular to that surface at that point. If any applied force is somewhat inclined to the surface then to calculate the pressure force we have to break the components of force and for purpose of pressure calculation, only perpendicular component will be considered. Thanks...

Pressure is exerted by any substance where as the stress is developed due to applied load on the object. Stress is the substance tendency to resist to deform or we can say oppose the force.

  Was this answer useful?  Yes

Pressure is a scalar quantity whereas stress is a resistive force against the external applied force and it is a tensor quantity which acts at a point and also depends on the direction normal of the plane passing through that point.

When we applied load per unit area that is pressure And internal resistance (i.e. reaction due to applied force) per unit area is Stress.

It means pressure is due to externally applied force and stress is due to internal reaction(that will be a force) due to that applied force.
