Each and every system on the network has its individual and unique IP address but we cannot remember the IP address of all, so we have assigned a particular name to each Ip address, which is known as domain name.

In TCP/IP network, each and every system on the network has a unique IP address but we cannot remember the IP address of all so we give them a memorable name. A DNS (Domain Name System or Server) serves the purpose of translating this memorable name to IP address so that the communication can happen.

Yes, DNS translates an IP address to a more simple name that's easier to use.  However, DNS has expanded beyond just that these days.  A network can and should have more than one DNS server.  You should at the least have a Primary DNS server and a Secondary DNS sever.  Active Directory works best with DNS installed on the server it's running on, however users should use this DNS as their primary lookup server; this DNS should used by Active Directory alone.   DNS can also be used for fail-over, some basic security and to reduce load on other servers by assigning multiple IP addresses to a single domain.

DNS means Domain name Server or Domain name system.

Requirement of DNS :

DNS helps to convert the ip address into domain name.Domain name into ip address. You cannot remember many website ip address at same time.So domain name is used for remembering the website.
For example 74.125.239.17 is one ip address of Google.com.It is very difficult to remember always. So you can use domain name to view the particular website. The primary work of DNS is if you give ip address in browser ,it search for domain name of particular ip address. If you give domain name in the address bar of the browser it convert the domain name to ip address(Search for the particular ip address). If you have any queries regarding DNS records use http://www.whois.com/
