How do you remove spaces from middle of the name in Reportnet

In ReportNet, I am trying to remove a space from the name field. What i want is to end up with the following but it doesn't like my syntax: substring([CES Archive: Transactions].[Expense Report Workflow Trail].[Employee Assigned to Step],1,6)
||substring([CES Archive: Transactions].[Expense Report Workflow Trail].[Employee Assigned to Step],8,
(length([CES Archive: Transactions].[Expense Report Workflow Trail].[Employee Assigned to Step])).

Does anyone know what the correct syntax is? thanks
