Explain Steps for upgrading the repository while upgrading Informatica 6.1 to 8.1

We are planning to move from Informatica 6.1 to 8.1.
I need to know the steps/guide for upgrading the repository.

It is possible to go from version 6 to version 8 directly or we have to move to version 7 and then version 8
