What is a deferred update in sybase?

Deferred updates are carried out by adaptive server. Generally in deferred updates the affected rows are analyzed and further updations needed on these rows are carried out by the adaptive server. In the process of deferred updates the log record is analyzed and insertions if needed is done on data page wherever needed or deletions of unwanted data pages are carried out as needed.

Deferred update is done
when the updated row does not fit in the same page
when the updated row needs to change information on the index page
when there is a subquery in the table join
when the update happens to the primary key which is being referenced by other foriegn keys.
