It should be 11 kms..
i.e. 8+3 =11
because 5 kms is the vertical distance he covered...so it wont be considered...

           c---------------------------d

           '5

a-------'b
    3

ans will be sqrt(11sqr + 5sqr)
sqrt(121+25)
12.08

           c---------------------------d
           '             8
           '5
           '
a-------'b
     3

BD=SQRT(5^2+8^2)======9.4
AD=9.4+3=12.4

method 2:
      AC=SQRT(3^2+5^2)===5.8
     AD=5.8 + 8====13.83

Which method we need to follow?
