     To understand list item, take MS-Word application.  If user wants to change the text Font then user can choose/select a required Font from the available list (called list item - Poplist Style).  If user wants to change the text Font Size then user can choose/select/type a required Font Size from/into the list (called list item - Combo Box Style).

List items are exactly what their name implies—a short list of values that the user can choose from. List items can serve as either database or non-database items.

They present the user with a number of choices. The choices they present are often more understandable representations of the data or information stored behind them.
