Windows XP media center does not meet the minimum system requirements for QC but this error means that it cannot connect to the database. Make sure you entered your SQL Server credentials in properly

Windows XP is not supporting downloaded Evaluation version from mercury site, so we changed OS to MS 2000 server and installed succesfully MQC8.0 trail version

I received this same error when installing QC 9.0 Trial Edition on a Windows 2003 Server.   The Resolution was two fold.  The first was that remote access was not turned one.  I opened the SQL Server Network Utility (run a search for the file SVRNETCN.exe) to run it.   Make sure that TCP/IP is enabled. This might require a reboot.  The second issue was that the sa login (for whatever reason) did not have dbcreator access.  I access SQL as an admin, created a new login with dbcreator access and used it instead of sa.

This got me passed the error.  Hope this information is helpful to others.
