What does a Control file Contain ?

A Control file records the physical structure of the database. It contains the following information.

Database Name

Names and locations of a database's files and redolog files.

Time stamp of database creation.

Control File contains

1) Name and location of all Datafiles.
2)Name and location of all redolog files.
3)Current log sequence Number.

  • name and id of database
  • time stamp of database creation
  • names and location of datafiles
  • names of tablespaces
  • current SCN number
  • current LSN number
  • Checkoint information
  • Backup

The controlfile contains :

1. Name and Location of Datafiles, Redo Logfiles.
2. Timestamp of Database Creation.
3. Current log sequence number is recorded when log switches are occur.
4. Checkpoint information is recorded as checkpoints are made.
5. Database identifier is recorded when the database is created.
