java2 is the version of java where 2 represents "second generation". The first release of java2 carried the version number 1.2 where 1.2 reffer to the internal version number. The latest release of Java is J2SE 5. Before this version there was J2SE 1.4 version. Because there is massive change in new version, the name is given J2SE 5 and the developer's kit is called JDK 5.However, in order to maintain consistancy, Sun decided to use 1.5 as its internal version number i.e. jdk 1.5
