Hi friendz..kindly help to answer these questions....(with solutions)1) A man I know travels to Chinsura everyday for his work. His wife drives him over to Howrah station every morning and in the evening exactly at 6.00 pm she picks him up from the station and takes him home.One day He was left off at work an hour earlier and so he arrived at the Howrah bridge at 5:00 pm instead of 6 and started to walk back home however, he met his wife in the route and got into the car. They drove back home arriving 10 minutes earlier than usual. How long did the man have to walk before he was picked up by his wife?

Solution to the above problem

Let us suppose tht the man's wife comes to the station to pick the man after t hours she started from her home.

Let the speed of her car be 'V' km/hr.

So the total distance she travels is (V*t)+(V*t)=2Vt.

The time taken for the man to reach their home is t hrs.

Now let us suppose tht the man travels for a time of x hrs with a speed of v km/hr before he meets his wife who has travelled for a time of y hrs at a speed of V km/hr before they meet. So they return home after y hrs they met.

The time taken by the wife is 2y hrs which is 10 mins early than t hrs

=>2y=(2t-(10/60)) ----->eq1

The time taken by the man is (x+y)=((t+1)-(10/60))---->eq2

Eliminating y from eq1 & eq2, we get..... x=11/12 hrs  = 55 mins.

=>the man have to walk for x=55mins before he was picked up by his wife...

Fine friend I hope this is the perfect ans to the above problem. If you do not understand the 2nd eq. just think about the man leaving 1 hour early and then analyze the eq..definetly you will understand......

Car reachs 10 minutes before so it takes to go and return the x distance in 10 minutes and normal time takes the car to reach the cross point is 5:55 so the man walk a period of 55 minutes from 5:00 to 5:55.

Man must have walked for 55min

Solution:- We can solve this problem by taking a small example

let the distance between the house and station be 60km and time taken to travel from car to station be 60min,so speed of car be 60km/hr.The man arrives daily at 6.00pm, Wife Starts from  home at 5.00pm at reaches at exactly 6.00pm to the station and they reach home at 7.00pm,one day man arrived early that is at 5.00pm ,Wife also started at 5.00pm,But it is given in the question that they saved 10min that means they must have reached home at 6.50 instead of 7.00pm.

Accordingly suppose we will assume that they met at 5.30 that means exactly wife covered 30km and again if they go back they can reach by 6.00pm,but they reached at 6.50pm,so they didnt meet at 5.30pm.Let us assume they met at 5.45 pm that means wife covered 45 km and if they go back they can reach by 6.30pm,so they didnt meet at 5.45 also.Suppose they met at 5.55 pm,wife covered 55km if they go back it takes 55minutes so they can reach at 6.50pm so they met at 5.55pm so husband walked for 55minutes.
