private address have defined to  the use in corporate domains.

these ip s have been reserved by internet .

these ip s are not used in internet .

Th ip range is from 10.0.0.0 /8

172.16.18.0 to 172.31.xx.xx

and 192.168.xx.xx.

when these ip  packets are routed in to internet they are discarded and dropped.

and it is not advised to use public address in private lan to avoid connectivity issues when connecting the network to internet.because the public ip may be in use in internet.

I beg to differ, but the range provided in the previous answer is not entirely correct. By definition a private network is a network that uses RFC 1918 private IP address space. As per the RFC, the range is:

RANGE                             NUMBER OF IPs

10.0.0.0    - 10.255.255.255      16,777,215
172.16.0.0  - 172.31.255.255      1,048,576
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255     65,535

HiI want to add one thing that whan we r using private ip address (which r free for every user ,while public ip 's are paid ip's provided by the isp) if we want to connect with internet we have to use NAT(network address translation) enable in router & one public ip , while we r using thousands of private ip's in that lan.

Hi,
    We are using the private range in our network because with the help of that we can easily differentiate it from the outside network. There are some specific range of the private ip
Class C- 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255
Class B- 172.16.0.0-172.33.255.255
Class A- 10.1.0.0-10.8.255.255

apart from these ranges we can not use other ip in our LAN environment.
