A tablespace is not a COBOL concept it's pure DB2. In version 8 of DB2 using a partitioned tablespace with 4096 partitions and a page size of 32K, the table space can reach 128 Tb. (that's terabytes, 128 trillion, 128 million gigabytes, 128,000,000,000,000 bytes) pretty big.
