What does this file /etc/path_to_inst contain and what is the importance of this file?

It contains all the Physical Paths of devices and the instance names.
The importance is that if you corrupt any paths while mirroring the disk or for any other reason
Then copy from this location

/etc/path_to_inst contains each device, its instance name and number along with its physical name.

For each device ,the system records its physical name and instance name in this file This file maintained by the kernel and is not advisable for the system administrator to change this file

For each and every device the system records its physical name and instance name in this file. during system booting kernel read this file for the possible of all devices.this file is maintained by kernel. instance name is nothing but another name of physical device name ,for example for IDE devices the instance name is dad and for SCSI devices the instance name is sdn.
